The Sprinkler Dress Disaster |
A wedding dress disaster is a bride’s worst nightmare, and the one we experienced in January was a catastrophe. When we received the call from the hotel the day before the wedding letting us know that there had been an accident, we had no idea how bad the situation was. Someone misguidedly hung the wedding dress from a ceiling sprinkler hook, puncturing the sprinkler, flooding the room and ruining the dress. With much tact, the hotel did not allow the bride to see the stained, filthy, wet bridal gown, as would have been horrified.
We were on our way to the church rehearsal when we received this shattering news, and we quickly changed plans. We picked up the dress and met the dress designer at an appointed parking lot. Standing in the parking lot, we all looked at the dress and gasped in horror. The dress was soaking wet, smelly, and stained with dirt, rust and mildew from years of standing water in the rusty pipes. Not an inch of the dress resembled the beautiful gown originally designed.
After the initial shock, John and I knew it was time to break the bad news to the bride. Our plan was to rush the bride to the bridal salon after the rehearsal dinner and begin fitting her with a new gown. The gown designer was determined that the bride would have a wedding dress for the 2:00pm ceremony on the following day. For this to work, they would have their alterations department work all night, but we would not be able to begin the process until after 10:30pm. The bride would spend the night at our home and go back to the store for a final fitting before getting her hair and make up done.
After the ceremony rehearsal, we shared the bad news with the bride and gave her time to compose herself before the dinner. Needless to say, she was in shock. I explained that she was not allowed to cry, and I would cry for her, since she could not have puffy eyes for the photographs the next day. We reassured her that we would do everything humanly possible to see that she had a beautiful dress.
Through the rehearsal dinner, we anxiously waited to hear from the dress salon that was first going to attempt to clean the dress. Remembering the stained, wet gown we had seen only a few hours earlier, we were not too hopeful, but the phone rang with good news. They had been able to remove all the stains on the dress except for the inside lining and bustle. After miraculously cleaning the gown, they spend hours blow- drying it by hand. Picking up the dress the next morning, John was amazed at the transformation. He brought the dress to our home where we gingerly laid it out until it was time to take it to the church. I was very afraid that although the dress was clean, it might have shrunk!
Our anxious bride met us early at the church. All of us were amazed at the beautiful clean bridal gown. There was no trace of the soiled, smelly sprinkler water we had seen less than 24 hours before. Our excitement was evident in our tears of joy as we all gazed at the dress.
The beautiful bride glowed as she walked down the aisle. None of this would have been possible with the dedication of the Bridal Salon team, who saved the day. The bride said to us “ what would I have done with my wedding consultants”.
