My paintings begin with ideas inspired directly from surfing, the sun and the ocean. I create my ideas with loose sketches, and that's where I discover the bestposition and design. Then I visualize the finished painting in my mind.
I'm a fast painter, so I enjoy working with paint-pens, sprays and acrylics because they allow me to move quickly on the canvas.
People are most drawn to my vibrant colors and the playful energy in my paintings. I strive to create movement and energy in my work. I am inspired by nature the waves, wind and the entire earth. My paintings reflect my love for these things. Life is G
A self-taught artist, Drew started painting his lively images on surfboards at a young age when he first learned to surf in his native South Carolina. With his sights set on being a professional surfer, he travelled the globe doing artwork to help pay for his surf adventures. Eventually, Drew found himself in Southern California and now lives with his wife Maria and their son Dylan, close to Trestles, one of his favorite surf spots in the world.
If you ask Drew what he does for a living, he'll say It's my job to make things look cool.
Drew has been an influential artist for over 20 years, showcasing his unique brand of surf lifestyle art around the world, and has partnered with over 30 licensees such as Vegas Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Converse, Sector 9, Palisades Skateboards, Liquid Force Wakeboards, Indo Board, and of course, Lost Surfboards where he became famous influencing an entire generation of young surfers with his highly creative original surf art using Posca paint pens. He has also illustrated greeting cards, CD covers and authored his own children's book through Walter Foster titled How-To Draw with Drew Brophy .
Today, the Drew Brophy brand style of surf art is deeply rooted within the care-free Life is Good surf culture he so passionately pursues traveling the globe with an open mind and a creative inspiration to connect with people on all levels wherever he paints.
Drew often will accept requests formissioned paintings and special projects, as well as a limited number of concept art designs that have transformed surfboards, guitars, motorcycles, cars, etc.
Occasionally Drew will exhibit his art at galleries in different locations around the world, particularly if it takes him someplace exotic with good surf!
The Drew Brophy Surf Lifestyle Art brand is managed and represented by Son of the Sea, Inc. It is a family owned business run by Drew and his wife, Maria. Drew creates art while Maria runs the business.
Each one of Drew's projects begins as an actual painting. New paintings are constantly being created, as Drew works hard to keep his designs fresh.
